Indochina's slogan markings served an array of commemorative, economic, charity, and political purposes. The format and size of the markings also varied. In some cases, the slogan marking was an integral part of the circular date stamp (called "Daugin" markings in honor of the inventor of these devices). However, in most cases, the marking consisted of a simple handstamp. Consequently, these latter types of markings are found on the reverse of mailings as well as on the front sides. While many markings were the approximate size of a circular date stamp postmark, some markings were so large that they would have interfered with reading the information on the front of an envelope. Consequently, the largest markings were most struck on the reverse side of envelopes. While markings typically utilized French, other languages were employed to reach the target audience. For instance, some messages were aimed at the largest audience possible. Some markings asking the public to buy government bonds carried messages in French, Chinese, Khmer, and Vietnamese. In this presentation, markings are arranged geographically and temporally as followsPre-World War IIGeneral - used across geographic areasTonkinAnnamCambodiaCochinchinaWorld War II -Vichy PeriodExpositionsPoliticalJapanese PeriodIndependence MovementPeriod before the return of Bao-DaiPost-1950VietnamCambodiaLaosThis is Ron's third book on the philately of Indochina and one no student of the subject can be without.
