The season starts sometime in August, when the sun still beats down, and heat waves rise from the earth. It progresses through species from antelope and elk to whitetail deer, upland birds and waterfowl. The weather cools, snow falls and ice forms across much of the U.S. Many people plan their vacations around these seasons, taking a week or even two to camp in the backcountry or to stay at a series of roadside motels. While hunting seasons look different for almost everybody, the common thread of anticipation runs through each one. We also have a tendency to get stuck in ruts. I hunt the same areas for the same species year after year. On one hand, that’s a good thing. It makes us more proficient, helps us learn more about the animal and leads to greater success. But it can also get repetitive, and we neglect so many other hunting opportunities. So this year, expand your hunting horizons. Consider applying for something new, or at least digging into what it would take. Me? I’m buying a general mule deer tag. Most of my fall has historically been full of chasing antelope, elk and any upland bird I can find. But I didn’t draw a pronghorn tag this year, so instead I will start to learn more about hunting mule deer and focus on that late season cow elk tag that I drew in a new place. And on any weekends that aren’t packed with hunting, I’ll target a new fish species. The ones in these pages are certainly tempting. Hopefully, this magazine provides you with a little inspiration and some tips on getting started.
